26.06.2023

The Network Against Racism was established in April 2020, during the quarantine period, in response to the racist and discriminatory measures implemented at that time, as well as the racially discriminatory statements made by some public figures. It was formed through the collaboration of Civil Society Organizations, academics, and activists. Today, the Network Against Racism consists of various groups such as the Refugee Rights Association, Queer Cyprus Association, Civil Society Initiative, Positive Thinking Initiative, Human Resources and Management Association, VOIS Cyprus, Nicosia Youth Union, Famagusta Youth Association, NANS (Nigerian Students in Northern Cyprus), Cyprus Science University Nigerian Student Union (SNU-CSU), Sierra Leoneans Union in Northern Cyprus, Bubble Out, The Shelter, Ghanaian Students Union, Congolese Union in Northern Cyprus, and Ghanaian Students Union in Northern Cyprus. The Network Against Racism continues to actively work towards its goals.

Representatives of the Network Against Racism recently held a meeting with the General Directorate of Police in the context of racist attacks that occurred in the Gönyeli region. Throughout the meeting, it was emphasized that targeting individuals based on their race, ethnic origin, language, religion, or gender is an unacceptable situation. The General Directorate of Police stated that respecting human rights and creating a society where everyone feels safe is achievable through collaboration, and they expressed their openness to such collaboration at all times. They particularly urged individuals who have been victims of racist attacks to feel free to approach the police and file complaints, assuring them that all necessary actions would be taken in such cases.

The Network Against Racism outlined several requests to the General Directorate of Police during the meeting. These requests included the prosecution of racist attack cases, the establishment of a working group, and the creation of a unit within the General Directorate of Police dedicated to International Individuals and Racism-related issues. The Network Against Racism stated that they would submit these requests in writing to the General Directorate of Police as soon as possible.

The overall tone of the meeting was quite positive, and it concluded with a mutual agreement to foster collaboration and solidarity.
